Sallyport (winter 2002)

For the winter 2002 issue of the Sallyport, the official magazine of Rice University, I was approached to provide illustrations for two features.

The first illustration was for a piece entitled “The Ethics of Biotechnology,” a piece that I thought would be best created through subtle blends over an imposing image. The image in this case was a photo of my ’generic innocent child’ (an intense childhood photo of my brother back in the days when he was young and cute). The text overlay is pulled from 19th century ethics manuals.

The second illustration was for an article entitled “Rice Engineering Team Makes a Splash at Boating Competition.” The image was a cut paper collage. A neat little tidbit is that the ’solar sail’ used in the illustration is actually an overpriced office mat from an Office Depot catalog.
