Run Phil Run
animation » 1 April 2001
This short film was a parody of Run Lola Run and played as the final episode of the Rice Broadcast Television series Drinking with Phil.
Phil, the naive protagonist, is just about to graduate when he gets a phone call from his roommate. Apparently his roommate needs $200 to pay off his parking tickets or else he won’t get to graduate. What ensues is a hilarious trip across Rice University campus and the surrounding neighborhoods — with Phil running in his commencement regalia.
I was approached to create the animation sequence, an animation sequence that needed to have three disparate elements just like in the real movie.
The final result was an animated piece that combines the 80+ still images I drew from a frame-by-frame analysis of the original Run Lola Run animations. These still images were then retraced on my Wacom tablet and colorized in Photoshop.
You can see animated GIF versions of the sequences by clicking on the small squares to the left of the above image. But please be patient, some of the images are over 800KB (the second square, which depicts the flow of the entire sequence).
